![]() A Contemporary Twist on an Age-Old Medium Beads have long been worn as jewelry, but this summer at The Dairy Barn Arts Center, contemporary artists are shaking things up. Come see an assortment of beaded artworks, from fine jewelry to loom weaving to sculpture, at Bead International 2008, a biennial international juried exhibition on display from May 23 to September 1. There are 68 artworks on display, representing 53 artists from across the United States and beyond. Works range in style from the traditional to the whimsical as they incorporate a variety of colors and materials. This exhibition will spark the viewer's creativity and broaden perspectives, as it considers any pierced object to be a bead. Works range in size from very small to life size. Many of the works are available for purchase. Additionally, Ohio University Press, Athens, Ohio, will publish a full-color book documenting the complete Bead International 2008 and Beyond Basketry 2008 collections. Beyond Basketry 2008 will be on exhibition at The Dairy Barn Arts Center from May 23 to September 1. This national juried art exhibition features 67 works by 42 artists from across the United States and will challenge the viewer's ideas of what constitutes a basket. All artworks on display are vessels made of woven materials, but the works explore a variety of sizes, colors and shapes. Artworks range in size from 5.5 x 2 x 1 inches to 6.5 x 8 feet and are created from a vast array of materials. Many of the artworks will be available for purchase. Bead International 2006 is the fifth biennial, international, juried exhibition of contemporary artwork in which beads are a primary element. Approximately 85 works will be selected for display by the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center, Athens, Ohio. Following its premier in Athens, selections from the exhibit will circulate as a touring exhibit from October 2006 through December 2008.
