Not Far From Home

By

Kenner Bush

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Although I have photographed extensively elsewhere, I keep returning to subjects not far from home, Athens County and Southeastern Ohio.
I favor the ordinary over the spectacular, subjects that whisper rather than shout.
Most often it is smaller details in the landscape that command my attention, impressing me with a sense of rhythm, order, balance, harmony, and -- if I am really lucky -- a dash of magic or mystery or make-believe.  Reducing the world to black, white and shades of gray is essential for me in reaching for a personal interpretation of what I see and feel.
It is like a treasure hunt and nature is always in control.             ~Kenner Bush~
Kenner Bush of Athens, Ohio has been interpreting the landscape in black and white as an amateur photographer for over 27 years.
He has participated in a variety of photography workshops in New England and on the west coast -- two with the late Fred Picker of Vermont, three with John Sexton of California, and one with Bruce Barnbaum of Washington.
Converting to digital in 2011, Kenner continues to work in black and white and with relatively small prints. He uses the same presentation and print format as in the past with film and gelatin silver prints.
Kenner is a regular exhibitor in juried and invitational group shows at The Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens. He has had exhibits at the President’s Home, Ohio University, Athens; Kennedy Museum of Art, Ohio University, Athens; Esther Allen Greer Museum Gallery, University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, Ohio; Markay Arts Center, Jackson, Ohio; and Blackrock Gallery, Jackson, Wyoming.
The varied and dramatic landscape and lighting of the American West as well as the rural setting of his native Southeastern Ohio, shaped by the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, are favorite places to work.
